My work deals with topics regarding the self and the loss of self, spirituality, religion, existentialism, nature and death. Often, I find these topics reflected in the natural world, and I try to translate this by painting individual objects from nature in a portrait-like format.
I approach painting as being inherently caught in a state of friction between being and non-being. Because one can never capture reality fully, painting is suggesting, rather than depicting. This sparks the imagination, while simultaneously, a painting reveals its own materiality in the physicality of the paint.
My process is intuitive, intentionally losing agency on occasion and allowing mistakes to shape the end result. A dialogue emerges between me and the painting, resulting in an ambiguity that goes beyond what I could conceptualize beforehand. This process is never truly finished, and the meaning found in a work is never conclusive.
